Integrative Oncology Support Throughout Your Cancer Journey
A cancer diagnosis can bring uncertainty, stress, and many questions about what you can do to support your health alongside conventional treatment. With so much information available about supplements, herbs, nutrition and other natural therapies, it can be difficult to know what is appropriate and what may be safe for you.
As a naturopath and medical herbalist, my role in integrative oncology is to provide personalised, evidence-informed support that complements your medical care. I work alongside your existing healthcare team to help you navigate nutrition, lifestyle, supplements and herbal medicine where appropriate, while considering your diagnosis, treatment, medications and individual circumstances.
Integrative oncology is not about replacing conventional cancer treatment. It is about providing supportive care that considers the whole person and may help address some of the challenges that can arise during and after treatment, with the aim of supporting wellbeing and quality of life.
A Collaborative Approach to Cancer Care
Every person’s cancer experience is different. Your diagnosis, treatment plan, medical history, lifestyle and personal goals all influence the type of supportive care that may be appropriate for you.
My approach is collaborative and centred around your individual needs. Together, we explore practical strategies that fit your lifestyle and complement your medical care, with careful consideration of your current treatment, medications and overall health.
Whether you are newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment, recovering after treatment or living well beyond cancer, my role is to provide personalised guidance to support your wellbeing and quality of life throughout your cancer journey.
Evidence-Informed Integrative Oncology Support
One of the challenges many people face is sorting through conflicting information about supplements, herbs, diets and other natural therapies. Not all natural therapies are appropriate during cancer treatment, and some supplements and herbs may interact with medications or affect treatment.
As a member of the Confident Clinician Club, I have access to the Knowledge in Integrative Oncology Database (KNOW), a specialist research resource focused on naturopathic and integrative oncology. It provides access to research that can help inform clinical decision-making around nutritional supplements, herbal medicine and other supportive approaches.
This allows me to research questions relevant to your particular diagnosis and treatment, while considering your medications, current health and individual circumstances. The evidence is one part of the process; recommendations are also guided by your medical care, treatment plan, goals and what is appropriate for you.
How Integrative Oncology Support May Help
Many people want to take an active role in their health during cancer treatment. Integrative oncology offers practical ways to support nutrition, wellbeing and quality of life while working alongside your conventional medical care.
Depending on your individual circumstances, support may include:
- Nutrition guidance to help maintain adequate nutrition and support strength during treatment
- Strategies for managing fatigue and maintaining energy through nutrition, lifestyle and daily routines
- Digestive support for concerns such as changes in appetite, bowel habits or digestive comfort
- Guidance around supplements, including considering safety, potential interactions and whether they are appropriate alongside your treatment
- Evidence-informed herbal medicine, where appropriate and compatible with your medical treatment
- Lifestyle strategies to support recovery, resilience and long-term health
- Stress management and mind-body approaches to support emotional wellbeing and coping
- Support for sleep, mood and emotional wellbeing during treatment and recovery
- Education and guidance to help you make informed decisions about natural therapies and understand the evidence behind them
The goal is not to overwhelm you with more tasks or restrictions. Instead, we focus on practical, achievable strategies that are appropriate for your circumstances and may support your wellbeing and quality of life.
Supporting Health Beyond Treatment
Cancer care does not end when treatment finishes. Many people continue to experience changes in energy, digestion, sleep, emotional wellbeing or overall health, while also thinking about how to support their health for the future.
Integrative oncology support can help you navigate this transition by focusing on recovery, resilience and long-term wellbeing. Together, we can explore sustainable lifestyle habits and practical strategies that support your health and fit your life and priorities.
This may include supporting nutritional health, establishing healthy routines, rebuilding confidence in your wellbeing, and developing realistic strategies around sleep, stress, movement and daily life after treatment.
Online Integrative Oncology Support
You don’t need to be in Christchurch to access integrative oncology support. Online consultations are available throughout New Zealand, making it possible to work with me wherever you live.
Your online consultation follows the same personalised process as an in-person appointment. We take time to understand your health history, cancer diagnosis and treatment, current medications and supplements, nutrition, lifestyle and your goals for supportive care before deciding what approach may be most appropriate for you.
Where appropriate, herbal medicine or supplements can be arranged through my dispensary and delivered to you. Recommendations are made with your current medical treatment and individual circumstances in mind.
