Supporting your digestive and gut health

- Gut symptoms can be frustrating and difficult to understand. You may be dealing with bloating, reflux, constipation, loose motions, abdominal discomfort or IBS symptoms that affect what you eat, how you plan your day and how you feel.
- Digestive conditions can be broadly divided into inflammatory conditions, where there is visible disease or tissue damage, and functional conditions, where symptoms are very real but routine testing may not always identify a clear cause.
- Conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), constipation, reflux, and Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) often require more than a simple dietary change. While medical investigations play an important role in ruling out serious conditions, many people are left wondering what to do next when symptoms continue.
- Gut health is about much more than the food you eat. The digestive system is influenced by stress, sleep, physical activity, medications, immune & nervous system function, and the constant communication between the gut and the brain.
Can a Naturopath help with digestive problems?
A naturopathic consultation can provide another layer of support when digestive symptoms are persistent, recurring or affecting your everyday life. Rather than focusing only on the digestive symptom itself, we look at the wider picture — including nutrition, stress, sleep, lifestyle, medications and other aspects of your health that may be influencing digestion.
If you have already seen your GP or gastroenterologist, a naturopath can work alongside your existing medical care, helping you make sense of the nutritional, lifestyle and natural medicine options that may bridge the gap in your treatment.
How naturopathic care can support your digestive health

- Personalised nutrition advice
- Fibre and dietary optimisation
- Herbal medicine and nutritional supplementation

- Bloating and abdominal discomfort
- Reflux and heartburn. Reflux can involve symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation and discomfort after meals. Identifying contributing factors and making appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes can be an important part of managing symptoms. Read more about natural approaches to GERD.
- Constipation
- Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI). The gut and nervous system are closely connected, and this relationship can influence digestive symptoms. Read more about the gut-brain connection.
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Many people living with digestive symptoms spend years searching for answers. Having the time to explore your health story, identify patterns, and receive personalised guidance can be an important step toward reducing symptoms and improving your overall wellbeing.

FAQs
How can a Christchurch naturopath help with my gut health and IBS?
As a qualified Christchurch naturopath, I don’t look at digestive issues like bloating, reflux, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) in isolation. During your consultation, we explore the wider picture of your symptoms by connecting the dots between your nutrition, sleep, daily stress, medications, and the complex gut-brain connection. This allows us to co-create an evidence-informed, sustainable plan tailored to how your specific body functions.
Can I claim my gut health consultation on my Southern Cross health insurance?
Yes. Because I am a fully registered member of the Naturopaths and Medical Herbalists of New Zealand (NMHNZ), your appointments may be eligible for a rebate depending on your specific health insurance policy module (such as the Southern Cross Wellbeing modules). I provide a full practitioner receipt after your session so you can easily file your claim.
Do you use functional testing like microbiome mapping or SIBO breath tests?
My clinical assessment is firmly grounded in your comprehensive health history, lifestyle factors, and symptomatic patterns. I do not routinely push expensive alternative or functional laboratory tests. Instead, we always look first at any recent pathology or blood test results you already have from your GP or gastroenterologist. If further targeted testing is genuinely necessary to unlock your progress, I can refer you to appropriate laboratories, keeping you fully informed of any out-of-pocket costs beforehand.
I’ve had digestive problems for years. How soon will I see results?
Chronic gut concerns that have developed over years take time and patience to untangle. While some clients notice positive shifts in comfort and bloating within the first few weeks of implementing targeted dietary modifications or herbal remedies, true, long-term health change generally unfolds over a series of months. Our initial 60–75 minute consultation is designed to map out this timeline realistically so you know exactly what to expect.
Do I have to come to your Christchurch clinic for digestive support?
Not at all. While you are always welcome to book an in-person session in Christchurch, I offer fully integrated online consultations via Zoom for clients right across New Zealand. Your online care follows the exact same deep-dive intake process. If specific practitioner-grade herbal mixtures or supplements are required, they are prepared in my dispensary and couriered directly to your door.
